Manistique Area Schools is located in Schoolcraft County which is one of the largest counties geographically in the State of Michigan, bordered on the south by Lake Michigan and extending sixty miles north almost to Lake Superior.  The main industries of Schoolcraft County are paper-making, limestone mining, wood harvesting, and tourism.

Manistique is a picturesque city of 4,000 people located in the southwest corner of Schoolcraft County at the mouth of the Manistique River.  A significant minority population is Native American, members of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.  A large portion of Schoolcraft county is in the Hiawatha National Forest on the west, the Manistique River State Forest in the central region, and the Seney National Wildlife Refuge to the northeast.
